US EPA Talk and Tour

July 26, 2018

The US EPA was happy to give interns interested in working for environmental causes an afternoon to investigate what their organization has to offer. Interns were treated with presentations on current EPA operations, a behind-the-scenes tour of several lab worksites, and one-on-one speed mentoring with professionals at the EPA.

IBM Talk and Tour

July 25, 2018

The IBM Talk & Tour was stupendous! The event was held on Wednesday, July 25th, and 16 interns attended, 3 of whom currently hold positions at IBM.

The evening started with networking and appetizers. Interns had an opportunity to meet and speak with early professionals and 7 local IBM executives. IBM senior state executive, Tim Humphrey, kicked off the night with a welcome and presentation about IBM’s RTP campus, IBM technologies and job opportunities among business units in RTP.

Duke Talk and Tour

The prospect of attending graduate school has never looked better for interns that attended the Duke Pratt School of Engineering Talk and Tour.  The evening included networking, the Duke Graduate School and Graduate Fellowship Mini-Bootcamp, a panel discussion with female graduate students, a delicious dinner spread, and a tour of the Duke Shared Materials Instrumentation nanotechnology facility.

TriWiSTEM Steering Committee member Dr. Patricia Parker spoke at the International Communication Association’s pre-conference in Prague, Czech Republic. She presented a paper on TriWiSTEM during a section of the pre-conference titled, “Diverse Voices: Authenticate Communication, Trust, Dialogue, and Society.”

The paper, entitled “Catalyzing Diverse Voices in STEM: A Women-Led Model of Social Change in a US-Based Research Park,” was co-authored by Parker and Steering Committee co-leads, Dr. Nan Jokerst and Joan Nelson.

IBM Leadership and Collaborations Workship

The Workshop had 67 attendees, representing 18 companies, 6 universities and 10 nonprofits/government organizations. The Workshop survey was completed by 87 percent of the attendees, and 98 percent of those attendees are interested in playing a role in the initiative. This response rate and level of enthusiasm are exciting!
